the land
On Saturday, we went down to Kentucky to work on The Land.
Cold air, blue sky, sunshine, fall colors, fire, food, a hike. And some very good people. Bliss.

st. e's caretaker

I found this little guy when I went into St. E's to take some photos. He seemed to be admiring the glass. He wasn't as skittish, or as squirrelly, as the average squirrel. He was remarkably calm and even willing to pose for a couple of pictures.
(Ryan helped him get out later... Go to http://www.gurnk.blogspot.com if you're interested in his story.)

pumpkin patch
Just before getting on the plane to come back to Ohio, I went to a nearby farm with my family. We picked the best pumpkins from the patch and ate apples from the orchard. Fall is good. I'm a huge fan.

the big party
We had a big celebration for Nana's 90th birthday at her church. We hung about 40 of her watercolor paintings in a hallway, and the rooms overflowed with people who love her. The entire family was there... all of her children and grandchildren, and many of them came from across the country for the big party. Isn't she beautiful?

another hike
I went for a second hike in the White Mountains with my cousin, my sister, and her dog. We hiked almost 5 miles... up a mountain, along a river, to a beautiful lake surrounded by other mountains. The colors were at their peak, and it was fabulous.

a solo hike in the white mountains
In the words of John Steinbeck, from Travels With Charley:
And in Salinas, California, where I grew up, although we had some frost the climate was cool and foggy. When we saw colored pictures of a Vermont autumn forest it was another fairy thing and we frankly didn't believe it... To find not only that this bedlam of color was true but that the pictures were pale and inaccurate translations, was to me startling. I can't even imagine the forest colors when I am not seeing them. I wondered whether constant association could cause inattention, and asked a native New Hampshire woman about it. She said the autumn never failed to amaze her; to elate. 'It is a glory' she said, 'and can't be remembered, so that it always comes as a surprise.'

On Saturday night I went up to Columbus to celebrate with the Bell's at their house warming party. I stayed the night and had some good times with Sharon and the girls the next day.

a night with the havens
Kenny and Marissa invited Ryan and me over for dinner on Friday night. We made pizzas with toppings from our garden. Then we went downtown to the pendleton art center to walk through a million art studios. I think we would all agree that the best part was the free wine and cheese. (I also ate a trick cookie that turned my whole mouth black... that was not my favorite part.) After a sweaty night with mediocre art, we drove back to Norwood. Then Ryan and I came back downtown to see Questions in Dialect. Good show.
