prayer vigil
There are so many people in our community who are without work or struggling with direction and vocational issues. We've struggled together and talked over things, but it just seems to be a common theme among us. So we decided it was time to be a little more serious about prayer.
On Friday we had an all-night vigil to really pray through this thing that has been plaguing so many of us. It was over 8 hours of corporate prayer... no music or talking, just praying and reading Scripture spontaneously together. I had never done anything like this before. I don't know what kind of answers God may have for us, but I know it was good to focus again on His ability to provide. When you're feeling poor and incompetent, its nice to remember that God is rich and has things under control.
Despite my best efforts, I think I nodded off a few times during the last thirty minutes. We ended by sharing the Eucharist together at 6am, and then Dave made omelettes for everybody who was still around. It was a beautiful experience.

mom's visit
So my mom was finally able to come out here to see what my life here in Cincinnati is all about. It was great having her here. During her stay, we went to Mt. Adams for Thai food, did part of the river walk downtown, and went to the park, the zoo, and the aquarium. The rest of the time we hung out with the good people in this community...

backyard bonding
On Wednesday, my mom arrived from New Hampshire to stay with us at the convent for a week. That night everybody sort of ended up hanging out in the backyard talking, playing games, blowing bubbles, and making chalk drawings together. I'm so thankful for summer. May it never end.

road trip, day 7: independence day
We spent July 4th at my parents' house. Chris, Larry, and Abby came down from Concord, and Nana and Harold came up from Lexington. We had a cookout in my backyard and relaxed all afternoon. In the evening, the five of us went with my mom to the fireworks at the baseball stadium in my hometown. It was a great show.
The next morning it was time to drive back to Cincinnati... So, we all squished back in to my car and spent 15 hours on the road. It was a great, low budget trip. Thank you to everyone who helped to take care of us!

road trip, day 6: the coast of maine
On Saturday night, my friend Tim joined the rest of us for a little trip to Ogunquit, Maine. We went on a coastal walk together, stopping often to climb the rocks and to explore the tide pools. There were starfish and snails everywhere, and we found a couple of crabs and hermit crabs. I found myself becoming more and more homesick for the beauty of New England... I kept trying to convince myself, the Ohio River is nice too. Hum...
After searching for sea creatures, playing in the sand, wading in the ocean, and enjoying the sunset, we all had dinner together at one of the little seafood restaurants in the town. Real and fresh New England clam chowder. Mmmm. And then to an ice cream shop for cones with an ocean view.
NOTE: I cannot take any credit for the beautiful photos in this post. My camera's battery died by the time we made it to Ogunquit, so I am using Matthias' pictures to show our good times in Maine. If you'd like to see more of his pics, go to mabey.fotopages.com.

road trip, day 5 and 6: a wedding in maine
On Friday morning, my friends took my car on a trip to Burlington, Vermont while I went to Maine for my friend's wedding. Erin and I have been friends since we were three years old!
Although she and Kjell now live in Hawaii, they had the wedding in Maine - closer to where Erin grew up. I stayed the night with Erin and Cheri at a beautiful inn right on the coast, and we spent the evening taking care of last-minute preparations for the wedding. It was so nice to stay the night, get ready, and have the ceremony and reception all in the same place.
It was a morning celebration on a perfect day. Hopefully, you can see from the pictures that it was an amazing wedding. Erin was stunning, of course, and they are a beautiful couple. Congratulations, Erin and Kjell!

road trip, day 4: white mountains
On Thursday morning, I woke up before the rest of the crew to have breakfast with my mom the best cafe in my hometown.
In the meantime, everybody else was getting ready. And after packing a picnic, we squeezed back into my car for a trip to the White Mountains. We hiked a few miles of the Appalachian Trail up to a beautiful lake where we ate our lunches and rested. Matthias even went swimming. The city is fantastic... but this was entirely refreshing.
After our big hike, we drove down to Meredith, NH and ate dinner at a restaurant on Lake Winnipesaukee. Later, we stopped at a bookstore in this tiny town, and they happened to be playing Over the Rhine's album, 'Ohio'. It had just been added to their inventory that very day. Funny...
We finally stopped for the night at Chris and Larry's house (my sister and brother-in-law) in Concord. I slept like a rock.
[still more photos coming...]

road trip, day 3: boston
Day three began with homemade blueberry muffins and a trip down to Lexington, Massachusetts. The five of us (plus my mom) had lunch there at my grandparents' house. Nana is the happiest, smilingest person I know... She could talk for an hour about the beauty of a single flower. She's the best!
From Nana's house, the five of us drove to the T station and took the train into Boston. We walked around in Boston Public Gardens, and Matthias, Kim, and I even rode on one of the swan boats... something I haven't done since I was a little girl! We spent most of the rest of the day walking through the city, mostly on the historic Freedom Trail. Later in the evening, we took the T to Cambridge, had dinner in Harvard Square, and walked through campus. We eventually made it home to my parents' house after midnight...
